Canada’s government will 
introduce stricter measures to control the spread of COVID-19 in Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Friday.
In addition to the new measures, major Canadian airlines are suspending all flights to “sun” destinations including Caribbean countries, effective Sunday, January 31.
International flights will only land in four major Canadian airports: Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary.
These measures will remain in place until April 30th, 2021.
Travellers to Canada will be required to take a COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test once they arrive. They will also have to stay at an approved hotel at their own expense for three days while they wait for the test results. The hotel must be designated by the Canadian federal government. The Prime Minister said that the estimated cost for travellers will be $2,000 per person.
If the PCR test is negative, travellers can then go home and continue their 14 day quarantine. This means that they will quarantine for three days in the hotel and a further 11 days at home.
If the test result is positive, travellers will need to remain at a designated government facility.
Travellers coming into Canada from a United States land border will also need to be tested upon arrival and demonstrate a negative test.
The travel restrictions have been put in place to minimize and deter any international travel in order to protect Canadians.
Prime Minister Trudeau recently asked Canadians to cancel non-essential travel. I mean really, look at the picture above, who would want to leave this place.
International travel has been regulated since March 2020, and is regularly revised. The current travel restrictions will last until at least February 21, 2021.
Some travellers may be exempt from the travel restrictions, such as Canadians, permanent residents, immediate family members of Canadians and permanent residents, some temporary foreign workers and international students.
Travellers are also required to get tested for COVID-19 with a PCR test prior up to 72 hours prior to departing to Canada. They must also use the ArriveCAN app to register their flight and personal information to the Canadian border services officers.
The ArriveCAN app will prompt users to perform daily self-assessments to ensure that the quarantine process is completed.
