Testing for Canadian Citizenship available online

Eight months ago, Canada suspended all in-person citizenship tests due to the coronavirus pandemic, creating a need for a new testing option. The immigration department is now testing Canada’s new online testing platform over the next few months, which is currently only available at the moment for those whose tests were cancelled prior to closure.

After testing the platform and it is confirmed reliable by the immigration department, more applicants will be invited to use the platform for citizenship testing.

In order to take the test, applicants must confirm their identity by submitting personal information, as well as submitting a “selfie”, and photos of their ID documents before taking the test.

Applicants will be given 21 days to complete the test, they are free to choose a time that in convenient for them.

During the test, the platform will take pictures of the participant, a common process that has been used to proctor other online tests such as bar exams.

 

Will the test be any different?

The online test will be no different than the in-person test in terms of format. The tests will be 20 questions long, and test-takers will have 30 minutes to answer them.

If your test was cancelled prior to the coronavirus shutdown, and you now wish to take the test, you do not need to reach out to the immigration department. You will be notified by email if you are invited.

If you do not want to take the test online and would prefer to wait and take the in-person test, you may also do so.
